Objective

Within the Prologue and first chapter of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, there are several important historical pieces of information that prove critical to the current setting of the novel as well as to what will happen later.

The objective of this lesson is to examine the importance of setting in a text, and in Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister in particular.

Lesson

1) Begin class with a focusing exercise. Have students write for 5 minutes in response to the following prompt: "What do you know so far about the setting of the novel? What two things do you think are the most important to know about the setting so far?" Collect their responses.
