Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1, 'Take It Easy, Mr Bond')

Objective

The novel opens with Bond suffering from a hangover. The previous night he had lost very badly at cards.

The aim of this lesson is to examine Bond's character.

Lesson

1) Class discussion. What do the students think Bond looks like? What is Bond's character background? What does this chapter say about Bond's character and how does it express it? What do the students think is Bond's motivations for being a secret service agent? What influence has Bond's character had on popular culture? How different is Bond's character in the book to Bond's character in the films?

2) Divide the students into two groups. One group should research Bond's life and the other group should think of questions they like to ask Bond about his life. Finish the lesson with a question and answer session.
