Objective

Objective: The bonds of sisterhood are obvious and apparent from the beginning of this play, even if the reader/viewer isn't sure whether the relationships are positive or negative just yet. Today's objective is to discuss the idea of sisterhood, its impact on those involved, and its power within a play.

1. Have each student share with the class how many siblings he has and how he feels about his relationships with these siblings.

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether or not they think having siblings (or not) has affected them in their lives and in their relationships to others.

3. As a class, have students discuss the idea of sisterhood, its impact on the sisters involved, and how it might affect the rest of the play. Have the students speculate as to why Chekhov decided to use sisters instead of brothers.
