Objective

The objective of Daily Lesson #1 is to explore race and social status in The Pearl. Race and social status play an important role in how Kino and Juana are treated at the doctor's office. Although they need his expertise desperately, the doctor refuses to see him because Coyotito comes from a poor family. Even the doctor's servant ignores Kino and his family, dismissing someone from his own race.

Lesson

1.) Class Activity: Divide the class into Kino's people and the rest of the town. Choose one person to play the role of the Doctor, one person to be his servant and another two people to be Kino and Juana. Re-enact the scene where Kino is at the doctor's gate.
