Objective

In Chapter 1, Joan writes that the ordinary nature of everything that preceded her husband's death made it difficult for her to truly believe it happened. The objective of this lesson is to discuss what the ordinary had to do with sudden death or disaster.

Lesson

1) Partner discussion: Divide the class into groups of 2-3. Why did Joan consider changing one of the lines at the beginning of the chapter to read, "Life changes in the ordinary instant"? What made it difficult for Joan to believe that John died? Did the ordinary aspect of his death prevent Joan from getting past this event and making peace with it? Why or why not? Did Joan believe that if the circumstances had been more extraordinary it would have been easier to deal with her husband's death? Why?
