John Muir was born in Scotland on April 21, 1838. During his childhood he participated in a lot of risky activities and games with his siblings, and he believed his family home was haunted. His father forced him and his siblings to work the family land. The objective of this lesson is to learn about John Muir's childhood.

1) Class Discussion: Who was John Muir? When was he born? Where was he born? What did he do in his free time as a child? Did he have a happy childhood? How do you know? What does this reveal about him?

2) Group Discussion: What did a servant girl tell John about the family home? Did he believe her? Why? What does this reveal about him? How did this affect his childhood?
