His father forced him and his siblings to work the family land. The objective of this lesson is to learn about John Muir's childhood.

1) Class Discussion: Who was John Muir? When was he born? Where was he born? What did he do in his free time as a child? Did he have a happy childhood? How do you know? What does this reveal about him?

2) Group Discussion: What did a servant girl tell John about the family home? Did he believe her? Why? What does this reveal about him? How did this affect his childhood?
