Bread crumbs are dropped by Hansel to create a trail through the woods. They find a old "witch" living in a cabin in the woods. During Gretel's illness, she screams "Don't eat me! Don't fatten me up!" (119) to Magda, as Magda administers food and medicine. Finally, the boy and girl are hidden in the oven to not be found by the Germans.
