Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

The children are brought to the village for their ration cards. The villagers later described Hansel and Gretel as brats on page 78 of the novel. Discuss why they used this term to describe the two children.

Essay Topic 2

The Major meets the S.S. Oberfuhrer on page 78 of the novel. The Major is impressed with the S.S. officer's physique, but nothing else. Explain and discuss the irony of the SS officer looking down on the Major's service ribbon.
