Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Bread crumbs are dropped by Hansel to create a trail through the woods. They find a old "witch" living in a cabin in the woods. During Gretel's illness, she screams "Don't eat me! Don't fatten me up!" (119) to Magda, as Magda administers food and medicine. Finally, the boy and girl are hidden in the oven to not be found by the Germans. How do these all relate to the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel. Do you think the author used the references in an effective manner? Explain your answers, be sure to provide support.

Essay Topic 2

Magda is holding Hansel after the ordeal with Gretel's illness. She tells him, "You will never be rich, my child, you will be moving too fast to be burdened with all those things that the outsider,the gadju, want" (113). Explain and discuss what she means by this statement.
