• The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: See, Lisa. The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane. Scribner, 2017. First Scribner paperback edition, April 2018.

• After the title page, there is an Author's Note, marked xi, about the cost of tea at the time of the novel and various pronunciations of the word for dark tea.

• Following the Author's Note, there is a poem from the Book of Songs (1000-700 B.C.). The poem tells when boys are born they are given the best; when girls are born, they get what is common.

• The poem establishes the status of male vs. female, baby boys are more important and valued more than girls.
