Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-3)

Objective

Chapters 1-3

In Chapter One, Penn Cage and Annie, his daughter, are at Walt Disney World. Yet, in the happiest place on Earth, these two characters are decidedly not happy. In fact, Annie has been unhappy since the death of her mother Sarah, seven months earlier. Hoping to ease both his daughter's and his own pain, Penn decides to return to Natchez to start over. The object of this lesson is to explore loss and the coping methods for dealing with death.

Lesson

1) Small Group Discussion: Discuss the impact on Penn when he loses his wife, yet still has to care for his daughter? How does Penn cope with Sarah's death? What other coping strategies might have been more effective or productive for him?
