Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine Tommy's marriage, and what is revealed about arranged and forced marriages. When Tommy got in trouble, his father and father-in-law devised a plan to save him. The plan required Tommy to marry.

Class Discussion: What type of trouble did Tommy get into as a young man? What was Tommy's father's solution to the problem? How did he and Mr. Agnello plan Tommy's future? How was a marriage to Rosa a part of that plan? How did Tommy describe what he thought of Rosa? Why did he flee to Texas? What happened when he came back home? Did he have any same in the arranged marriage? How would you describe Tommy's marriage? What does it reveal about arranged or forced marriages?

Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss how Tommy felt about marrying Rosa...
