Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine why Belle's family is passing as white, and what is revealed about life for Blacks during the early 1900s. Belle was born Belle Marion Greener. Genevieve believes her children will only have a future if they pass as white.

Class Discussion: What were Belle thoughts when she was 17 and she heard her parents arguing about passing as white? Why did she not see it as a big deal? Why did she believe her family was as white as Italian and Mediterranean immigrants? Where did Belle know her family would have to live if they admitted their race? Why did Genevieve believe the fight for equality was over at that time? Why did she believe things would only get worse? How did she believe segregation would limit what Blacks could do?
