Create a Wagon

Make a model of a wagon such as the ones used in the Donner Party wagon train.

Do a Documentary Study

Watch a documentary depicting a typical emigration experience. Discuss how it related to the Donner Party.

Breakfast on the Trail

The travelers at cornmeal mush, grits, salt pork, and/or bacon on the trail. Pretend you are on the trail and make a similar breakfast.

Sing Some Songs

In the evening the travelers relaxed around the fire and sang songs. Find some songs you all enjoy and have a sing-along. To be really authentic, find a recording of "The Cumberland Gap" and learn it so you can sing along.

Cast a Vote

The men on the trail took a vote on whether or not they should take the shortcut. The women were not allowed to vote. Think of an important issue the class members...
