Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 60))

Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Lalami's establishment, in Part I, of the family dynamics in the Guerraoui family. Nora feels a keen sense that she has disappointed her mother, Maryam, and often trades barbs with her older sister Salma. Nora feels more affection and acceptance from her father, Driss, and when Driss is killed in a hit-and-run accident leaving his work as a diner owner in the beginning of the novel, Nora feels completely unmoored. Lesson

Class Discussion: What is Nora's relationship with her father like? How does Nora feel immediately after she hears the news of her father's death? What tensions and problems immediately arise following Driss's death between Nora and her mother and sister?
