• The author’s grandfather, Patrick Gourneau, fought against “termination” as tribal chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa and while working as a night watchman.

• The novel is loosely based on his experiences.

• The novel opens in September of 1953.

• In “Turtle Mountain Jewel Bearing Plant,” Thomas Wazhashk arrives at the bearing plant for his job as a night watchman.

• The plant is the first to provide manufacturing jobs near the reservation.

• Most of the employees are women, who had higher scores on tests for manual dexterity than men.
