1. Class discussion: Who are Ashima and Ashoke, what is their relationship to each other and how did they come to be in the hospital at the beginning of the book?

2. Comparison: This activity can be done as a class or individual activity: Compare and contrast Ashima and Ashoke. What are there goals in life as stated in this chapter? What differences do you see in their personalities that come from those differing goals? Which character is more firmly rooted in traditional Indian culture and why? What happened to Ashoke that moved him further from Indian culture than might otherwise be expected? If this is an individual activity, have each student write at least one paragraph answering each question.
