This object symbolizes the intent to conquer and the desire to memorialize in writing the details of a particular conquest. When the armada reached La Florida, the notary, Senor Albaniz, unrolled this object and proceeded to read from it, declaring the territory of La Florida to henceforth belong to the King and Queen of Spain.

Mustafa recalls that when he and a number of other members of the armada stood upon solid ground in La Florida, one of the first actions taken was for this object to be raised by a soldier among the party. Mustafa then thought back to his childhood when a similar object had been "hoisted over the fortress tower in Azemmur" (10).
