This scene is the perfect first scene, as it sets the stage for the rest of the book when we see some of the actions David does behind Norah's back that could possibly come back to haunt him and his family. The objective of this lesson will be to explore some of the possible foreshadowing that happens in this scene and to discuss some of the possible outcomes.

Lesson

1) Prediction: Read aloud with the class the part where David sends his daughter away with Caroline, saying he wants to protect Norah from the pain of a sick child. Have the students each write a short prediction about what this statement could be foreshadowing. Do you believe this is a secret he will be able to keep? Why or why not? What evidence is there in the scene to support your belief? Allow some volunteers...
