· Chapter One begins with an in-progress charity auction, at which Machiavelli bids on nineteenth-century kabuki masks he has wanted for some time.

· Machiavelli’s history with the masks and appreciation of masks, generally, are rehearsed as he bids on the items until interrupted by a call from Dee requesting help.

· The strained relationship between Machiavelli and Dee is glossed as the latter notes the arrival of Nicholas Flamel in Paris, along with Scathach, Josh, and Sophie.
