Dita Adler

This character lived in Prague before the war. She and her family are first taken to a ghetto for Jews and then to Auschwitz. She becomes the librarian there. She uses books as an escape from her circumstances. After the war she lives with a friend until she marries and emigrates to Israel. She was a person who actually lived during the time period in which the novel is set, although her name was changed.
