Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss how Ko uses accumulation in Chapters 1-2. Accumulation is a literary device. It allows authors to gather scattered ideas in a literary work and gradually build on information that readers need to know.

Class Discussion: How does the story unfold in Chapters 1-2? From whose perspective are these chapters told? What is learned about Deming/Daniel and his situation in these chapters? How does the author use Deming/Daniel's thoughts and an email to add information? How does the author accumulate information to reveal what has happened to Deming/Daniel and help readers understand his situation? How does Ko use accumulation to reveal his identity and the circumstances that have shaped him? How does the author use accumulation?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Discuss how the author reveals that Deming is Daniel. What is revealed...
