1. Describe how Vivaldi feels when he first sees Ellena in Chapter 1.

Vivaldi is attracted by Ellena's singing voice, which he first hears in the church of San Lorenzo. Vivaldi is even further enchanted when the wind blows the veil away from her face. He decides to court the beautiful young lady.

2. How does Ellena react to Vivaldi's attempts to draw her attention in Chapter 1?

Ellena remains silent and continues to perform her duties, refusing to admit she has more than admiration for Vivaldi. She visibly ignores several of his attempts to serenade her. She does take notice, however, and later is heard to be singing Vivaldi's song.

3. How do Vivaldi's parents feel about his courting attempts?

Vivaldi's parents are definitely against their son pursuing Ellena. His mother would never agree to his marrying Ellena and attempts to detain him to prevent him from further courting. His father, who is displeased, says nothing about his son's absence while he courts Ellena.
