Essay Topic 1

What is your interpretation of the book's title, THE HUMAN COMEDY? Does Saroyan mean to imply that these characters are having a good time? Or is there a message he wants the reader to learn from reading about the characters? Or is it something else entirely? Support your answer with examples if possible.

Essay Topic 2

Project into the future ten years and write a brief synopsis for the lives of Homer, Mr. Spangler, Mrs. Macauley, Ulysses and Bess. Be sure to include emotional states as well as physical characteristics, geographic locations, work, hobbies, socialization, etc.

Essay Topic 3

Explain the role of women in the 1940s when the women in the novel are living their lives. What precedents do they feel compelled to follow? What restrictions do they have? What freedoms did they have that 21st century women do not have?
