Piano playing began with Clementi who invented it and and then its use was further developed by Mozart in mid-1770. They both played harpsichord, clavichord, and organ through 1800 when the piano became most popular along with the organ. No recordings exist of Mozart, Clementi and their contemporaries.

2. What does the author write about the style of early musical composition on the piano in the Preface? How did advancements take place?

Early pianists wrote music that had clues to their personal characteristics. For example, pianist Henselt wrote music that took "remarkable stretch" and "peculiar hand formation" to reach his left-hand extensions. Several pianists lived in the late 1800s or nineteenth century and recorded in the twentieth, like de Pachmann and Bauer.
