Part I - Barbara

· The first chapter of the book starts in the present and then circles back to the past.
· Chapters alternate between past and present, and subtitles indicate when they take place.
· The chapter abstracts use the present tense and provide a linear summary.
· In Part I, “Barbara,” “Louise, August 1975,” Louise, a 23-year-old counselor for the Balsam Cabin at Camp Emerson, discovers Barbara's bed is empty.
· Louise walks to the curtained area she shares with Annabel, the 17-year-old counselor-in-training (CIT), who is a ballet dancer from Chevy Chase, Maryland.
· Although Annabel is closer in age to the campers, she is firm with them.
· Louise shakes Annabel awake and notices the beer scent emanating from her.
