• Margery O’Hare is very cold riding through the forest on her mule.

• She is expecting to meet Nancy, a 64-year-old woman, who lives in a tiny log cabin at Red Lick with her bedbound sister, Jean.

• Nancy walks five miles to meet her to get a book to read.

• Clem McCullough approaches Margery with a loaded gun.

• He is drunk.

• He tells her to get off her mule and then comes close enough to grab at the reins.

• Margery hears Nancy singing in the distance.

• Margery reaches into her saddlebag and grabs a heavy book.

• She smacks it as hard as she can in his face.

• His gun goes off, and he falls to the ground.

• Margery does not...
