Understand the backdrop of the novel: 1700's America.

Lesson

Class Discussion: What were the main events of the 1700's for America? When was America settled? When was the United States founded?

Activity: The 1700s was a time of intense - and often vicious - fighting between the different colonial super powers, Britain, France, Spain and Portugal, as they sought to dominate various parts of the newly explored continent; America. Organize the class into small groups and ask each group to research and prepare a presentation on the foundation of the United States of America, starting from the inauguration of the first states to the first Federal Congress. Include the War for Independence and the formulation of the 'idea' of the United States.
