Private Mandella, Chapters 1-2
• The story begins with Private Mandella sitting through a military training class that is intended to teach several ways to kill without making any noise.
• Rogers asks the sergeant how likely it would be that one would face a Tauran armed solely with a compact shovel. The sergeant answers that this is a prime example of how the recruits must get creative. They need to be able to kill them even if they are armed with only a nail file.
• Each evening there is a sleeping roster in which male and female recruits are paired in bunks. Mandella quietly slips into bed with his assigned sack-mate and falls asleep.
• The next morning, Mandella and the other privates prepare for space war by building a bridge in freezing cold Missouri. The heating mechanisms are not turned on to demonstrate how cold it will be on...
