Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine the gender norms Sofia and Antonia are exposed to, and how gender norms and roles are taught. In the Family, girls and women are expected to follow certain types of behavior. These gender norms are passed down from their grandmothers and mothers.

Lesson

Class Discussion: What gender norms are Sofia and Antonia exposed to as children? Who presents these gender norms? How are they passed down within a family? How do their mothers show them the norms and roles for women and girls? Who stays with Sofia while Rosa is having a baby? What norms does her grandmother teach her? How are Sofia and Antonia taught gender norms and roles?

Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group analyze the impact of Krupitsky's choices to show the gender norms expected of women in Book 1. How does...
