• This book is written in the first-person, mostly past-tense, from the point of view of Danny Conroy.

• When Andrea came to the Dutch House for the first time, Danny's housekeeper Sandy told him and his sister Maeve to brush their hair and teeth to meet her.

• It was unusual for their father Cyril to have any guests. The children went downstairs to meet Andrea, who was complimenting every aspect of the large mansion known as the Dutch House.

• Maeve was about 7 years older than Danny at the time.

• The Dutch House had been built by a rich Dutch couple called the Van Hoebeeks, and they had made their fortune in cigarette manufacturing.

• The whole neighborhood at Elkin Park knew the Dutch House...
