The life of the hobo is one that seems romantic and yet something that's unrealistic to the modern day reader - at first glance. Today's objective is to discuss the life of a hobo as Ray seems to make it appear to the reader and what reactions the students might have.

Lesson

1. Have the students make a list of the things they associate with hobos and their lifestyle. What might they look like? Act like?

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether or not they think they would like the lifestyle of Ray. Why do they share the answers they do?

3. As a class, have students discuss whether they think the life of a hobo is a realistic one in this day and age. What are the problems of this lifestyle now? How might someone go about living this lifestyle?
