Chapter 1 — The Book of the Dead

• The Dew Breaker starts in Lakeland, Florida, where Ka Bienaimé says, in first-person narrative, that her father has disappeared with the sculpture she has driven from Brooklyn, where she was raised, to Florida to deliver.

• The manager of the hotel where she is staying and a police officer come to take her report, but they are not optimistic or enthusiastic about this missing person case.
