Objective

Characterization of Bruce Wayne/Batman

The protagonist of "The Dark Knight Returns" is Bruce Wayne/Batman. The objective of this lesson is to analyze his character at the onset of "The Dark Knight Returns."

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: What is the purpose of opening the story with Bruce Wayne racing his car? How does the character interact with the reporters? What is already apparent about the character's history and mental state? What questions are raised by Bruce Wayne's thrilling and narrow escape from the car wreckage?

2) Small Group Activity- Divide the class into groups of three or four students. Each group should distribute duties of recorder, reporter, writer, and timekeeper. Please be sure to define the roles and their corresponding responsibilities. Students are to use the text to complete the following chart about Bruce Wayne's character:
