The setting of the Dark is Rising is an integral part of the novel. The objective of this lesson is to focus on how the setting sets up the opening events in The Dark is Rising.

Lesson

1) Class Activity- Find and show students pictures of early rural English life. Cooper draws on a lot of the setting from medieval times, so include pictures of a blacksmith, wagons, and farms. Students should discuss how the setting is similar to other English fantasy novels they've read or movies they've seen (such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Chronicle of Narnia, etc.).

2) Writing Assignment- Dawson's farm is the setting of the opening section of the novel. Write an essay explaining the importance of this setting for Will and his destiny.
