Objective

The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Egan's exploration of racial bias In Part I through the character of Bix Bouton. Bix is the famous and extremely wealthy founder of Mandala, at first a social media company and then the company that makes it possible to "externalize" one's memories. Bix is Black, and he experiences lifelong tension with his own father, who he feels always encouraged him to "think small or get hurt," largely, Bix believes, because of their skin color (112). Early in his career, Bix feels that the more people know of each other through social media sharing and interaction, the better they will get along - but by the 2010s, he is beginning to revise this semi-utopian view of the possibilities of tech.
