The novel begins with a detailed description of the river Drina and the town of Visegrad. The Drina flows through mountains and gorges and opens up into rolling valleys. The land around Visegrad is fertile and is good for cultivation. This lesson will explore setting.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: The river Drina flows forcefully through steep mountain rocks and gorges until it widens into rolling hills. The mountains are so steep and close, they look like a "dark wall." Discuss with the class how the river, the mountains, and the town are described. What language does the author use to create a picture of the powerful river? How is the town described? What does the land produce in abundance?

2) Small Group Activity: Form small groups and ask them to summarize the descriptions of the river from Chapters 1-2. How do people cross before the bridge...
