Lesson 1 (from Prologue)

Objective

Prologue: In the Prologue, one chief justice resigns and another is nominated and confirmed. This lesson will focus on how someone becomes a Supreme Court justice, specifically how someone becomes the chief justice.

Lesson

1. The justices are nominated by the President, then confirmed by the Senate. Break the class into small groups. Given what they know about the court, ask them to come up with a list of questions that the president would want to ask his nominee. Then have them come up with a list of questions the Senate would ask. Compare these lists as a class. Are they similar or different?

2. Now give the class the following information: justices serve for life, or until they retire, resign, or are impeached. justices get to rule on many cases, and say what laws and procedures are constitutional, and what are not--and then Congress and the rest...
