• Part 1, “The Boys,” Chapter 1, the narrator described Biloxi, Mississippi, 100 years ago, when it was the seafood capital of the world.
• The city was known for having liquor, even during Prohibition.
• Gambling and prostitution joined the illegal activities available.
• Attempts were made to clean up the coast, but corrupt politicians and police officers accepted bribes to ignore the illegal activities.
• In 1941, Kessler Army Airfield was built and the number of “bars, casinos, brothels, and striptease joints increased dramatically” (5), along with crime.
• In the late 1950s, the Dixie Mafia, a group of thugs, settled in Biloxi hoping to make money from the vice.
• The Dixie Mafia had a reputation for lawlessness, but crime in Biloxi was kept under control by the owners and controlled by the police...
