NARRATION - In this chapter, the reader is introduced to the narrator of the story. It becomes increasingly clear that the narrator is Death, even though this fact is not explicitly stated. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the character of the narrator, and discuss why Death might be narrating Liesel's story.

Lesson

1.) Class Activity: As a class, create a list of adjectives used to describe the narrator of the story. Does the narrator seem like a kind character, or a cruel one? How can you tell?

2.) Class Activity: As a class, compare / contrast the voice of the narrator with the voice of Liesel. What is the same about their voices? What is different? Is there anything unexpected / surprising in this comparison?

3.) Group Activity: Divide the class into groups...
