Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze Li's depictions of Saint Remy, Agnes's home village. In the early 1950s, Saint Remy is a rural, farming, backwater village that is small and poor. It has been ravaged by the war, and both Agnes and Fabienne have experienced loss and tragedy related to the war in their own families.

Class Discussion: Where is Saint Remy, and how does Li describe it in Part I? What kind of life do children like Agnes and Fabienne have in Saint Remy?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group of students to answer the following in a group writing exercise: How does Agnes describe Saint Remy, especially contrasting France to America as an adult in Part I looking back?
