· In Chapter 1, “The Witches in the Rose Garden,” the Beast is in the rose garden of his castle.

· He is thinking about the beautiful young woman inside his castle.

· Belle is taking her father’s place as a prisoner in the castle dungeon.

· He cannot understand why a woman would give up her freedom for her father.

· He does not believe he could make that sacrifice or even have that kind of love.

· He looks at the view of his castle.

· He is not sure how it looked before the curse, but now it seems “menacing, and alive” (2).

· He does not remember everything seeming so sinister before the curse.

· There are statues that line the path from the castle...
