Objective

Introduction

The Constitutional Convention was convened in order to solve problems with the Articles of Confederation, which were not strong enough to hold the states together. This lesson discusses the problems with the Articles of Confederation.

Lesson

1) Research activity: Give students reference materials and ask them to research the end of the Revolutionary War and the writing of the Articles of Confederation. What was the political environment like in America? What problems were the Articles of Confederation designed to solve?

2) Short presentation: Ask students to spend some time preparing and then delivering presentations about the theories behind the Articles of Confederation. How were the states trying to associate themselves in the Articles of Confederation? Did the states write the Articles of Confederation with the same natural rights as they would later use in the Constitution? If not, what political theories informed the Articles of Confederation?
