Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

The Burroughs books are escapist literature in many senses, for not only do they provide a means of escape from the harsh, real but they also celebrate an escape from the world of conventional and superficial restriction into a world of freedom and action. Discuss, in depth what is meant by the above statement. Use examples from the book to support your response.

Essay Topic 2

Oftentimes, a book has more of a character-driven plot rather than action driven, and oftentimes the other way. Some books seem to balance the two.

What do you think it means to say that a plot is character driven or action driven? Which type of plot do you find more interesting? Why? Do you think it is possible to have a plot where action and character are developed to the same degree? Why or why not? What type of plot do you think Tarzan of the Apes is? Explain your response.

Essay Topic 3

When asked why Burroughs wrote the Tarzan series about a “noble savage” he said: Of course the primary motive of a story like Tarzan of the Apes is to entertain, yet in writing this and other stories I have been considerably influenced by the hope that they might carry a beneficial suggestion of the value of physical perfection and morality. Discuss what you think Burroughs means by the above quote. Do you think Tarzan fulfills Burroughs’ vision for Tarzan? Why or why not? Use examples from the book to support your response.
