Objective

Objective: In Act 1, the description of the setting for Street Scene allows the audience to infer a few things. The people that live in the building, and therefore the characters of the play, are probably working class judging from the description of the apartment house and neighboring buildings as being old and falling apart. In areas of neglect crime rates tend to be higher. This lesson will discuss the significance of the setting.

1) Class Discussion: Describe the setting.

Small Group Activity: What can you infer from the setting? What do you know about the people in the building? What do you know about the neighborhood?

Class Discussion: Share the groups' thoughts about the setting, the people, and the neighborhood. What assumptions must be made to infer this about the characters and their neighborhood?
