Objective

Setting. Storming Heaven is set in West Virginia during the early part of the twentieth century. This is during a time of violent conflicts between farmers in West Virginia and coal companies.

The objective of this lesson is to look at setting in the context of literature and the particular setting of Storming Heaven.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. How does it change the "tone" of the book for it to be set in places that still exist today? Is it more interesting? Less interesting? Does it make it more interesting that you can find the places mentioned on a map?

2. Group work. Create a chart listing all the locations mentioned in Storming Heaven and where they are.

3. Class work: Students will write a short paper on how the town in which they reside and currently attend school has shaped their lives.
