Greg Mortenson is the author of Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time. Mortenson is also the co-founder of the Central Asia Institute, a non-government organization that builds schools and promotes the education of girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

2. What does CAI specialize in? Why?

CAI specializes in going into remote areas first to take education and hope to places that would not normally see it. This includes villages so far from civilization that bridges must be built in order to bring in building supplies or areas in the middle of military fighting where the local people are shut off from the world due to violence.

3. What events inspired the formation of CAI?

CAI was begun in 1993 when Greg Mortenson failed in an attempt to reach the summit of K2 and became lost on his way back down the mountain. Mortenson ended up in a tiny village called Korphe where he was taken in and nursed back to health. While there, Mortenson learned of the village's need for a place to teach their children.
