Objective

Set in the 1960's era Cold War, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold happens during a period of history with which many students may not be familiar. The setting and political context of the time, however, is critical for the understanding of the text.

The objective of this lesson is to familiarize students with the Cold War.

Lesson

1) Begin class with a focusing exercise. Have students write for 5 minutes in response to the following prompt: "What is your understanding of what the Cold War was? Who was involved? What was it about?" Collect their responses.

2) Introduce the text with a short introduction about the time it was written and the author.
