The aim of this lesson is to look at the novel's impact on popular culture.

Lesson

1) With the students, brainstorm what they already know about The Sound and the Fury. Divide the students into pairs and ask them to research the novel's themes, characters and structure. On the students' return, compare what they have found and discuss what influence they think Faulkner's ideas have had on popular culture.

2) With the students discuss the representation of southern families before Faulkner's novel. After ten minutes look at how Faulkner represents the southern family. What are the major differences?
