Objective
The objective of this lesson is to examine the statement, "You're like a donut. There's a hole in the middle where something solid should be" (49), and what it reveals about Mamush. Mamush seems scattered. Something seems to be missing in him, and he is often inconsistent, detached, and undependable.

Class Discussion: What does Mamush reveal about himself in Chapters 1-5? How does he interact with family and friends? How does he struggle to relate to family and friends and to meet their expectations? How does he disappoint family and friends? How does he seem to deal with his responsibilities? Why does he seem scattered? What seems to be missing in him? How is he often inconsistent, detached, and undependable? Why is he like a donut?
Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss whether Claire's comparison aptly describes Mamush. When does Claire...
