1. When and where was Woodfox born?

Woodfox was born in the "Negro" (1) wing of Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He was born on February 19, 1947. His mother, Ruby Edwards was 17. His father was gone.

2. Why did Woodfox's mother leave her husband, James Mable?

James Mable was a chef in the Navy. When he was forced to retire after 25 years, he moved his family to the farm in North Carolina where he grew up. He lost his self-esteem without the responsibility and respect he had in the Navy. He started beating Woodfox's mother. Finally, his sisters told his mom that she needed to leave or she would die. She left and went back to New Orleans.

3. At the beginning of Chapter 2, what would Woodfox and his friends do after school?

After school, Woodfox and his friends would meet and figure out ways to get things they did not have. They shoplifted bread and snuck into the theater to watch movies. To earn money, they sang and danced in the French Quarter or stole flowers from the graveyard and sold them to tourists. To eat they would meet at a bakery before dawn and steal rolls and pastries from delivery trucks.
