Lesson 1 (from Part One, Lost Forever: Chapter One)

Objective

Joe loses his wife and his daughters in a plane crash.

The objective of this lesson is to examine how such intense loss can break a person's will to live.

Lesson

1) Initiate a class discussion on the subject of loss and tragedy. How is Joe affected by the losses of his wife and two daughters? Why is he unable to move forward, even after a year has passed?

2) Break the class into groups of three or four and debate the effects of such immense personal loss. Why is the loss Joe suffers so intense? What makes this tragedy one he can't cope with? How does his loss compare with the untimely death of a spouse, or a child alone?

3) In short essay form, examine the effects of grief. How can grief take away a persons' will to survive? What can be done to help a survivor...
